Why is my Printer not Printing Anything?

One of the biggest triggers for frustration and for tempers to flare up in many offices is when a printer malfunctions. Truly, it is so irksome when you are in the middle of your task and you need documents urgently but your printer is not cooperating. No matter how many times you try, nothing comes out.

Don’t fret, you might just be able to find the cause and a possible solution here.

  1. Improper alignment of paper. A prompt will usually turn up on your computer if this is the issue. However, if you are printing directly on your printer, the prompt may not show. The best thing to do is to check the alignment of the paper on the paper tray. Make sure that the sensors are properly picking up the dimensions of the paper so that it can detect the size properly.
  2. Pseudo paper jam. This is such a troublesome issue; it happens when your printer is reporting a paper jam but there is no blockage or jam anywhere. What you can do in this situation is to check your printer first to make sure that there is no debris that may be blocking the paper path. Check for any staples, clips of torn pieces of paper that may have been lodged into the rollers. If there are none, try fanning out your paper. This is useful in order to loosen any pieces that have stuck to each other or in order to reduce the friction between the pages. You can also try lessening the number of papers in your paper tray. For ease of transaction, load around a hundred sheets to prevent overwhelming the input rollers with too much paper. For smaller printers, around twenty sheets would be a good amount to ensure that your printer can handle it.
  3. Unstable connection. A weak connection between your printer and computer can definitely cause an issue in your printing. This can occur whether you connect via Wi-Fi or cable. If you’re connected via Wi-Fi, reset the connection to strengthen the signal. You can also try turning off other devices and use the connection exclusively so that you will not be sharing bandwidth. If this does not work, you can try the manual approach and connect via cable. Check the cable and ports for damage if you’re already connected via cable. This may hamper the ability of the computer to communicate with the printer.
  4. Clogged printhead. If your printer has been sitting unused, check if the ink is still in good condition and if the printer heads can dispense ink. Ink can harden or dust can accumulate, causing the nozzles to clog. Perform a test print after cleaning your printer to ensure everything is working properly.
  5. Check if you have the right setting. If you switch printers frequently, ensure you’re sending the print command to the correct printer to avoid errors. Make sure you use the correct printer so it properly receives and interprets the command.
  6. Check the ink level. The printer may not be able to print your document if one of its ink cartridges is empty. Check your printer’s ink levels to ensure all cartridges have the proper amount of ink.
